First Impressions of the Lectric XP4 Tempest: Affordable Utility with a Moped Vibe

Having personally tested over 180 personal electric vehicles (PEVs) across scooters, bikes, and mopeds, it’s not often that a spec sheet alone piques my interest. But the Lectric XP4 Tempest, a new electric moped-style e-bike from Lectric, stands out—not because it’s aiming to dominate in speed or power, but because it’s laser-focused on affordable urban practicality, with a dose of rugged style.

This isn’t a high-speed motorcycle alternative. It’s something more approachable—yet more substantial—than the average city e-bike.

XP4 Tempest at a Glance

Lectric has made its name in the e-bike space with folding bikes like the XP 3.0, delivering real value without frills. With the XP4 Tempest, they’re expanding into a new category: the moped-style utility e-bike. And while I haven’t gotten this one under me yet, the on-paper stats suggest they’ve built something that meets the moment for budget-conscious riders looking for both comfort and range.

Here’s what Lectric is offering:

  • Top Speed: 28 mph (Class 3-compliant)
  • Motor: 1000W rear hub motor (nominal), likely with ~1300W peak
  • Battery: 52V 14Ah (728 Wh), removable
  • Range: Up to 50 miles on a single charge
  • Weight: ~80 lbs
  • Suspension: Front & rear dual suspension
  • Price: $1,299 at launch

That’s a lot of bike—literally and figuratively—for the price.

With more than 180 PEV’s under our belt we like to think we know a thing or two about new e-bikes and we think this one is worth checking out.

Built for the Urban Jungle, Not the Drag Strip

While some bikes in this category flirt with motorcycle-level speeds, the XP4 Tempest keeps things street legal and accessible. With a 28 mph top speed, it’s a true Class 3 e-bike that fits right into bike lanes and commuter routes. The 52V battery system gives it a bit more punch and voltage headroom than your typical 48V setup, which should translate to snappier acceleration and more consistent performance on hills.

The range claim of 50 miles seems achievable in real-world conditions with moderate pedal assist. On throttle alone? You’re likely looking at 25–35 miles depending on rider weight, terrain, and usage style—still solid for a commuter under $1,500.

Comfort and Control Matter

Where the XP4 Tempest really seems to separate itself is in comfort. Dual suspension, a padded moto-style saddle, and wide tires point to a smooth, upright ride—even on broken pavement or gravel. For anyone who commutes longer distances or deals with pothole-riddled streets, this design choice is going to be a welcome change from rigid-frame budget e-bikes.

It’s also notable that Lectric is keeping their signature foldable frame off this model, choosing instead to prioritize durability and comfort over portability. Smart move for a moped-style build.

A New Angle from a Trusted Brand

What gives the XP4 Tempest credibility—before even touching the handlebars—is the company behind it. Lectric isn’t some random startup or drop-shipping operation. They’ve built a reputation on solid support, reliable components, and real delivery times. That means the XP4 Tempest might not just look the part, but actually deliver day in and day out.

Final Thoughts (For Now)

While these are just first impressions based on the official spec sheet and press materials, the XP4 Tempest looks like it’s filling a very real gap: a dependable, street-legal e-bike with commuter-friendly range, full suspension, and a price tag that won’t scare people away.

If it rides anywhere near as good as it looks on paper, this could become one of 2025’s best budget moped-style e-bikes.
