Why would an industry rating applied to robot vacuum cleaners matter to electric scooters? Turns out, UL standards matter a lot. UL certified electric scooters are a big part of increasing electrical safety worldwide.

For example, in their race to curb the risk of fire from lithium batteries, the New York City Council passed a law last year. New York now makes all personal electric vehicles (PEVs) sold and rented in the city have a UL Certification: a four digit rating given to consumer products by Underwriters Laboratories

UL marks ensure a high degree of product safety from each electric scooter and electric bike bearing the rating. There are three types of UL Certification given to PEVs:

• UL2849, the Standard for Electrical Systems for e-Bikes
• UL2272, the Standard for Electrical Systems for Personal E-Mobility Devices, for all powered mobility devices, including e-scooters
• UL2271, the Standard for Batteries for Use in Light Electric Vehicle Applications, of any storage battery for a powered bicycle or mobility device
