5 Ways to Change Your Life with an Escooter
Maybe you’re home for the holidays, just visiting the town you grew up in. Maybe you moved back there or never left. You know everything about it. If something happens, you’ll hear about it, right? Not quite. You can always be surprised when you explore by escooter, especially if you have a scooter with longer battery life and a higher top speed.
Below are 5 ways to make your old town new again by traveling through, in, and around it by e-scooter, preferably an electric scooter with roadworthy qualities like pneumatic tires and/or suspension and a dual braking system.
When you travel by scooter, you find new things happening all around you – restaurants, stores, and galleries popping up, one-time events popping off.
You also have experiences that aren’t advertised because they aren’t for sale: sunsets/sunrises, architecture that you miss at car speeds, and chance meetings that would never happen otherwise.
We have some buying suggestions below if you’re new to scooters, as well as links to some of our best guides for new electric scooter riders. Check out our tips below, and always wear a helmet wherever you ride!
The Best Electric Scooters of 2024
1. Check Local Listings & Join a Forum
This one might seem obvious, but it’s not. We all get lazy. Expand your search. Join a local forum for one of your interests, whether it’s basketball courts nearby or local bird watching groups.
Also, be sure to join our Electric Scooter Guide Forums. You’ll find all sorts of tips there for everything electric scooters.
2. Find or Start a Group Escooter Ride
When you visit the ESG forums, you get access to a group rides sub with riders from around the country and beyond. You can start your own group ride there, or through our FB group and other socials.
Or just get a group of friends together who you know already ride – and remember that most scooters and e-bikes can comfortably keep pace, so you can include cyclists as well. Group rides are an excellent way to explore your city or town.
3. Know Your Lighting Conditions
Sure, you check the weather before you leave the house, but do you check the lighting conditions? This is an important safety consideration. You should know whether you need sun protection and/or sunglasses. You need to bring additional lighting and wear reflective clothing if there’s a chance you might be out after sunset.
You’ll also be able to time your arrival at specific spots during the best times of the day: as the sun just begins to rise or set, for example, when you’ll grab the perfect view and capture the moment, if you’re a photographer, or think of yourself as one, anyway. After all, that’s how the pros find the perfect lighting: they plan for it.

Ride your electric scooter on bike paths and/or trails if you usually drive or bike on the road. Or if you usually ride on paths and trails, ride on the road. If you have a portable scooter, combine it with public transit and travel to stations you’ve never been to before. Do your commute differently.
We convince ourselves we’ve seen it all because our habits take us on the same routes every time. Break a cycle of boredom by traveling to old places in new ways.
Check your local laws, of course, to find out where you’re allowed to go before taking your electric scooter on the road or trail.
5. Expand Your Territory
Ride through neighborhoods you’ve never visited, maybe even some not so great ones! (in broad daylight) Go to outskirts and suburbs you’ve never seen. You will find hidden gems that won’t come to you.
You will need a longer range scooter to do this kind of urban/suburban exploring, and a scooter with enough acceleration and speed to keep up in low-speed traffic. Also, you’ll need to be a more experienced rider before you’ll feel comfortable venturing out beyond your comfort zone.

Infrastructure is changing around the world to accommodate not only electric cars but also personal electric vehicles like scooters and ebikes. PEVs are the best way to expand your local knowledge of your surroundings and to do so without the hassles and costs of gas, parking, or traffic.
One of the best ways to get around is an electric scooter that handles bumps and rougher road conditions and won’t leave you wondering if you’ll make it home.
