The Segway ZT3 Pro – Off-Road Ready, High-Tech, Powerful & Cheap

Everyone knows the Segway name, but not everyone knows just how much Segway deserves its reputation for making some of the best-built, and most technically innovative, personal electric vehicles on the market today. More than once, we’ve seen Segway Ninebot set the bar for what a great scooter can and should be. Can they do it again with the new Segway ZT3 Pro? We think so.

It’s no exaggeration to say that nearly every “best of” list we’ve made features a Segway at or near the top, whether that’s the GT1 or GT2, their premium performance models, or the Segway Ninebot Max, a benchmark single motor commuter scooter that got even better in its Max G2 release.

We’ve given the Segway Max G2 so many well-earned awards that it’s hard to keep track at this point. These include awards for 2nd most reliable scooter under $1,000, Best Single Motor Commuter Scooter, and Best Long Range Under 1,000. And the Segway GT1 and GT2 electric scooters more or less led the way when it came to innovative performance design in 2023.

All that’s to say, when Segway announces a big new release that promises to shake up the industry, we believe them. The ZT3 Pro is the first in a brand-new ZT series of scooters. It looks like the kind of total game-changer other scooter companies will take years to catch up with in terms of engineering, design and high-tech integration.

The Segway ZT3 Pro also promises to shake up the world of electric scooters in terms of cost. It’s already selling outside the US at unheard-of under-$500 prices.

While the ZT3 Pro is a single-motor scooter, like the GT1, it’s built for performance. The ZT3 Pro has a 1,600W peak power motor for massive torque. Unlike the GT1, the ZT3 Pro’s main strength isn’t touted as speed, but versatility. While this scooter is only rated for a top speed of 24.9 mph in manufacturer specs, its powerful motor, ground clearance, and suspension make it ideal for off-road riding.

The Segway ZT3 Pro features a telescopic front fork and rear swingarm coil suspension. It’s got 6 inches of ground clearance and 11-inch all-terrain tubeless tires, and – like the GT series – it’s got a Traction Control System (TCS) for enhanced grip. There’s also the Segride™ stability enhancement system, patented technology that reduces vibration, shake, and wheel slips on slippery surfaces.

The ZT3 Pro also incorporates all the integrated security and efficiency tech we have loved in the Segway Ninebot Max G2 + more. There’s Apple Find My for easy tracking of your scooter. There’s also a Bluetooth Airlock System for remote locking/unlocking, an upgraded battery management system (BMS) with 10 layers of charging protection, and Flash Charge technology that allows for a full charge in just four hours.

Just like the Max G2, the Segway ZT3 Pro uses RideyLong™ range optimization to make sure you get the maximum range on your ride. Segway rates the scooter for 43.9 miles in Eco mode and 18.6 miles in Sport mode, which seem like reasonably conservative estimates. We’ll get a chance to test these numbers out soon.

Segway has engineered a rugged, high-tech ride with a weight of only 65.5 pounds – about 50 pounds lighter than the Segway GT1. The Segway Ninebot ZT3 Pro, the company says, is the result of “extreme R&D.” Instead of a redesign of an older model, it’s “a completely new scooter designed from the ground up to maximize fun, versatility and capability.”

We’re guessing this scooter will have huge acceleration and hill climbing skills, and – given Segway’s track record – it will excel in our reliability rankings. The ZT3 Pro is built on a high-strength carbon-steel frame with ASA thermoplastics composing its outer fairings. The body is IPX5 and the battery is IPX7 for water resistance, and the scooter has been tested over 3,100 miles already for quality assurance.

When can we expect to see the ZT3 in stores? Segway plans to launch the scooter in the US later this month, with pre-orders available on September 26th. They promise that the US version will be unlocked for a higher top speed, so we’ll soon see what that hugely powerful single motor can do when fully unleashed. We look forward to sharing all the juicy details with you. Until then, check out the Segway Max G2 for one of the best commuter electric scooters currently on the market.
