VMAX VX2 Hub vs VX2 Gear: The Best Mid-Range Electric Scooters of 2025?

We’ve tested over 180 electric scooters over the past few years, and 2025 has easily been one of the most exciting years yet. From upgrades to old favorites to totally new releases, the middle of the market is getting way more competitive. That brings us to VMAX, a Swiss brand making its big push into the U.S. with two new models: the VMAX VX2 Hub and the VMAX VX2 Gear.

These two electric scooters are designed for everyday use—but don’t call them “commuter scooters” just yet. They both have real power, thoughtful design, and features you usually don’t see until you’re spending a lot more.

We got to test both the VX2 Hub and VX2 Gear in real-world conditions, including hill climbs, range runs, traffic rides, and of course—some fun speed pulls. Here’s what we found.

What Are These Scooters About?

Let’s break it down simply. The VX2 Hub is the faster, higher-performance model. The VX2 Gear is the lighter, more affordable version, with surprisingly strong torque for a single-motor scooter.

Here’s a quick side-by-side:

VX2 HubVX2 Gear
Peak Power1900W1400W
Top Speed~34 mph20 mph
Weight54 lbs49 lbs
Range (heavier rider)23.6 mi19.4 mi
Price (Intro)$1,199$1,099

Both come with:

  • Dual spring suspension
  • 10-inch pneumatic tires
  • IPX6 water resistance
  • Turn signals (bar-end and deck)
  • App support
  • Cruise control
  • Automatic headlight and dimming display
  • UL certification

How Do They Ride?

We were honestly surprised at how refined these feel. The dual suspension isn’t flashy, but it’s tuned really well—just enough bounce to take the sting out of potholes without feeling squishy or unstable. You feel planted but not punished.

The VX2 Hub rides like a compact high-performance scooter. It’s quick off the line, hits over 30 mph pretty easily, and feels stable when cruising fast. The VX2 Gear is slower (topping out around 20 mph), but it’s got a punchy launch that feels great for city streets and climbing hills.

Speed & Acceleration (With Numbers)

Let’s look at the test data:

VMAX VX2 Hub

  • 0–10 mph: 2.19 sec
  • 0–15 mph: 3.84 sec
  • 0–20 mph: 5.71 sec
  • Top speed: 34.1 mph

VMAX VX2 Gear

  • 0–10 mph: 2.35 sec
  • 0–15 mph: 4.0 sec
  • Top speed: 20 mph

The Hub is definitely faster, but don’t sleep on the Gear’s torque. It feels strong off the line and, for a single motor, it climbs better than you’d expect.

Hill Climbing (Surprisingly Good)

Hill climbs are where a lot of scooters struggle, especially under heavier riders. We tested both on a 200-foot hill:

  • VX2 Hub: 9.95 seconds
  • VX2 Gear: 10.8 seconds

Both made it up without hesitation—and that’s a big deal. Some scooters in this price range stall or crawl on real inclines. Not these two.

Real-World Range (Heavier + Lighter Riders)

We weigh 235 lbs, so our range numbers tend to reflect how heavier riders will experience these scooters. In our range test:

  • VX2 Hub: 23.6 miles
  • VX2 Gear: 19.4 miles

We also got data from Paul (165 lbs), who hit 29.9 miles on the Hub. So yeah—lighter riders can expect about 10–15% more range across the board.

VMAX VX2 Hub vs VMAX VX2 Gear Braking

Both scooters use regen braking plus a mechanical setup:

  • Hub has rear mechanical disc brakes
  • Gear relies only on regen

But what makes them special is that you can modulate the regen force—it’s not just on/off. It feels natural and responsive.

Braking test from 15 mph:

  • VX2 Hub: 1.8 seconds
  • VX2 Gear: 2.4 seconds
  • (For comparison, Ninebot MAX G3 takes 2.72 seconds)

Which One Should You Get?

Here’s our take:

🏎️ Get the VX2 Hub if:

  • You want real top speed (30+ mph)
  • You ride longer distances or mix with fast traffic
  • You want the best all-around performance and ride feel

🚲 Get the VX2 Gear if:

  • You ride mostly in city bike lanes or slower areas
  • You’re okay with a 20 mph cap but want great torque
  • You want to save a little and keep it under 50 lbs

Honestly, both scooters punch above their weight, but the VX2 Hub is the better overall deal for just $100 more, especially with the extra speed, better brakes, and longer range.

Final Thoughts

VMAX came out swinging with these two. If you’re shopping for a mid-range electric scooter in 2025, don’t skip over the VX2 lineup. Whether you’re climbing hills, commuting, or just cruising around town, both the Hub and Gear offer something legit—at prices that make sense.

We’ve tested over 180 scooters, and these two easily land in the top of the single-motor class.
